StoryBoard for Independent Project
After deciding on using the poem "A dream" by Edgar Allan Poe as the base for this project I read through the poem and made a simple sketch of the main events I want to portray.
I then took this simple sketch and made it into a proper storyboard for the proposal to better portray the visuals I want to create.
I started off by creating some cloud like shapes and adding some shading to them to make them look 3D, I started off with dark clouds since the poem starts by talking about darkness. I then added a subtle light source which would be flickering in the distance.
For the next part of the story board the flickering light reveals the scene so I made lighter clouds, I added some glow on the edge of the clouds where the light hits them and some rays of light that lead you eye to the wilted flower which is on a cloud.
I wanted this flower to represent the "joy departed" in the poem since flowers have have connotations with beauty but also death, so I think this wilted flower represents this beautiful thing that has lost it's life. Though I don't believe the poem is talking about death specificly with this phrase, I do think that this imagery represents something good that the speaker has lost.
In the next scene a glowing path appears, I represented this with glowing footprints but I might portray this in a different way when I actually get to making this piece. This path leads the viewer to a plant pot and along the way there will be floating objects which link to the passing of time and growth. The two examples I added were a clock and a watering can, since clock clearly is associated with time and water is used to help a plant grow. I might add some more things like this, prehaps in a more surreal way but I don't want to draw too much attention away from the path and the plant pot which is probably the main focus in this scene.
After this a butterfly approaches the plant pot and in the pot is a sprout of a growing plant. Intially I wanted the plant pot with the plant to be in black and white to represent the past, since the poem mentions looking at the past, but I didn't think it looked right in the storyboard, but I might incorporate this when making the project since I had the idea of the butterfly bringing colour to the plant, like how in the poem the speaker is somewhatr enlightened by the dreams and views them as a guide which draws them away from the darkness and thinking of the past all the time.
The plant grows into a flower and a storm starts, the butterfly flies away and becomes a guiding light for the viewer, alike to the "lonely spirit guiding" mentioned in the poem. The storm also links to the poem since it mentions "storm and night". I also added a glow around the story board and some lighting on the plant.
For the end of the piece the sky turns to night and the butterfly becomes just a star in the sky, I used the same dark clouds from the first part of the story board but added a moon and some stars to make the scene a bit more friendly. I also throught about adding some colourful planets to this scene, to sort of represent the speaker finding the joy in their life again (prehaps through their daydreams), it also makes the ending seem more positive than the start.
Overall I was quite happy with how this story board turned out, I tried to make the images as nice as possible in order to represent my ideas properly but I know they are not perfect.
