Wordpress: Portfolio

(19/10/21) Today we started creating portfolios using WordPress.

First, we installed WordPress on the computer and used Filezilla to move the WordPress directories into the web hosting account files, so that the website can be viewed online. After this, I set up my account and downloaded some themes to try from WordPress Themes | WordPress.org and moved the files in with the WordPress files using FileZilla. After doing this I could then try the different themes, I settled with the "Kadence" theme. After this, I created a home page to have a go at setting up a page.

Creating a homepage

The process of creating the page was quite easy and the "Blocks" system was quite interesting.
I added text and photos, as well as using the "Column" block to help layout the photos and text.

I also created a "Button" block in my about page, which linked to this blog.

We also had a look at websites which have good designs. I found this website called "Simply Chocolate" (https://simplychocolate.dk/) which has the purpose to sell chocolate but is interactive and very well designed.

When you scroll it shows you the different chocolate bars that they offer. The background also changes, and the chocolate bar and background move with the scroll. The text is kept very simple to not distract. There is also an arrow on the chocolate bar which allows you to 'tear' the wrapper of the chocolate bar, doing this takes you to the shop page for that bar. (You can also just click the arrow instead to do the same thing). The shop pages give you a sort of story about the bars; there is lots more text so the background is quite simple. For the majority of the pages they include images of the ingredients of the  bar that is being viewed.

The website also uses colour nicely, there is a different colour scheme for each bar, but they all have the same layout to keep the pages consistent. There is also consistent horizontal colour blocking throughtout the website, as well as a variety of horizontal and vertical text. Overall, I like this website because it is fun to look at and also does a good job at presenting the bars they are selling.

The Photoshop page of my Portfolio

After learning the basics of editing our wordpress sites, we added pages to display our work. This included:
  • A page which included a link to our blog (This blog). I did this by adding a 'Button' block and attaching a link to this blog.
  • An about me page with a sort introduction to ourselves.
  • An illustrator page to display our illustrator works. This used the 'Columns' block, including images and text; I also included buttons which linked to the associated blog posts.
  • A photoshop page. Similar to the illustrator page but with Photoshop work.
  • A page showcasing the 'cup of tea' video, using a 'Youtube' block.
After this we worked on the main menu (Appearance > Menus) This allowed us to link the pages in the menu at the top of the site.
