Storytelling ideas

We had a session where we looked at the progression of storytelling in media with examples. We first looked at games like Mario, which started of with very little storytelling elements but there was still a story within the game which was rescuing the princess from the tower. As technology developed there were more cinematic scenes introduced into games.

We also explored how storytelling was done through different types of media like books, comics, films and we identified that the media type can impact the way the story is told. For example web comics are usually read scrolling down, so you can have more vertical images compared to something like a book or comic which has some physical limitations.

For this project I thought about maybe turning one of the dreams, which I have had, into a comic or an animation. Since around 2019 I started to create a list of the dreams I had and they are often quite strange so I share them with my friends and a few times my friends have commented that they could be turned into an animation/comic, so therefore I think that would be a cool thing to do.

After thinking about having a dream as my storyline I then thought a bit about how I will portray it. I thought about different elements I could maybe include to make the story more interactive, for example:

Changing the background, rearranging the story order/ randomising the story, allowing the reader to pick the order of the story or to input words that could be used.

I also thought about games that I have seen use some interesting storytelling aspects, for example I saw a video showing the game "A Little to the Left" which is a puzzle game based on organising objects. For one of the puzzles you get a selection of images, that are all of different things but there are some similar elements like cats (but in different places), to solve the puzzle you have to put the images in the order that makes a story.

I also thought about how in the rotoscoping project I created an alternate animation where every frame was a different style. I could maybe incorporate something like this.
I also thought that I could add puzzle elements which would allow the user to interact with the animation. Another simple way that I could add interactivity is to add elements that when clicked they do something.
